Broncos Battle to 8-7 Road Win Over Coyotes

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – After a valiant comeback effort from host Cal State San Bernardino, the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team delivered a clutch performance and secured a hard-fought 8-7 road win over the Coyotes.

With the result, CPP evens this week's series at 1-1 and improves its overall record to 6-2. The Coyotes fall to 3-8. The two teams will conclude their series with a doubleheader at Scolinos Field. It'll be Homecoming at the CPP campus and the Habit Burger truck will be at the field for fans to enjoy lunch.

The Broncos totaled 13 hits in total on Friday night and took a 7-1 lead into the bottom of the fifth. CSUSB managed to even the score fairly quickly and the two teams took a 7-7 game into the top of the seventh.

That's when Ryan Webberley started a two-out rally with an infield single. Jacob Bernardy followed by bunting for a base hit. After a pitching change, Matt Muñoz lined a 3-2 single off reliever Daniel Diaz to bring in Webberley.

That proved to be the winning run as the CPP bullpen delivered a stellar performance. Austin Boyle pitched a perfect eighth inning and J.J. Franklin followed with a perfect ninth. It marked the third save of the season for Franklin.

The Broncos' offense built its momentum quickly on Friday night. It took just six pitches in the top of the first before CPP jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Muñoz opened with a leadoff single and Kyle Garlick followed with a homerun, his fifth of the season to lead all CCAA players.

The inning continued for CPP as Michael Erb added an RBI single and Bernardy wrapped up the rally with a two-RBI hit with two outs. After the Coyotes put one on the board to cut the margin to 5-1, CPP added two more scores in the middle innings. In the fourth, a Garlick triple scored Muñoz. One inning later, Nicholas Bruno took advantage of a CSUSB error to race home after a Christian Kelley hit.

In the end, Zach Williams earned the win in relief for CPP as he tossed two innings and struck out two batters. Muñoz finished the day at 3-for-6 offensively, scoring two runs along the way.
