CPP Sweeps Homecoming, Improves to 8-2

POMONA, Calif. – With a pair of Homecoming wins under their belts on Saturday, the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team swept the doubleheader against the visiting Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes.

The Broncos won the series, taking three of the four games. With the victories, CPP improves to an 8-2 mark on the season, and the Coyotes fall to a 3-10 tally.

Both games featured strong pitching performances from the Broncos' starters and the first game was a matchup between Chris Powell and CSUSB's Tyler Rahier. Powell came away with the win after dealing 7.2 innings for the Green and Gold and striking out eight in the process. He allowed just two hits and one earned run.

Powell improved to a 2-0 record on the season and fellow senior J.J. Franklin secured his fourth save on the season. CPP won 6-5.

The second contest on the day was a bit easier for the Broncos as they put up three and the Coyotes were unable to tack on any. Taking the mound for CPP was freshman Ryan Alsworth, who secured his first collegiate victory in a 3.2-inning two hitter, complete with a pair of strikeouts. Zach Williams and Erik Trask followed in relief, and Franklin again came in to close it and earn the save, his fifth of the year.

Game One: Broncos 6, Coyotes 5

In the first game the Broncos posted 13 hits. Christian Kelley and Ryan Webberley both went 3-for-4 at the plate and provided at least one run for CPP. Nick Cooksey belted two hits en route to three runs batted in for the Broncos.

Kyle Garlick added two hits also while crossing the plate twice himself. Michael Zidek and Mat Munoz also added hits to the game. Munoz contributed a run and an RBI.

Game Two: Broncos 3, Coyotes 0

Only the second inning of game two produced any runs for either team. Mike Philp sent a single up the middle that advanced Webberley to second and score Michael Erb. A couple of quick plays later and Munoz singled to center to score Philp and Jacob Bernardy.

The course of the game saw just five hits for the Broncos and four for the visiting squad. Munoz provided two hits for CPP, Cooksey, Nicholas Bruno, and Philp provided the remaining three.

Cal Poly Pomona Baseball will return to action next Thursday with a 2 p.m. home game against the Lancers of Cal Baptist.
