Broncos Fall in Game 1 against the Otters

SEASIDE, Calif.- The first game of the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos' weekend series against the Cal State Monterey Bay Otters proves to be a difficult one as the Green and Gold fall 12-3. The series will continue Saturday with a doubleheader that is set to begin at 11 a.m.

The Broncos will enter Saturday's twinbill with an 11-4 overall record, complete with a 3-2 mark in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). CSUMB remains undefeated in conference play as they head up the CCAA with a 9-0 tally.

Starting on the mound for the Broncos was Max Bethell who had a rough go of things as the undefeated Otters showed their offensive talent. The first inning saw three members of CSUMB score and push the home team into an early lead.

The start of Bethell's appearance was a rocky one as his 5.1 innings pitched yielded nine hits and seven earned runs. The junior provided four strikeouts in the game and dealt 101 pitches. Coming in to relieve him in the sixth inning was Erik Trask. At the end of Trask's showing three more runs had crossed the plate, this time however they were unearned.

Closing things out for CPP on the bump was Wyatt Shackleford, whose offerings unfortunately met the hot bats of the Otters and provided them with their final two runs, bringing the home team score up to 12.

The Broncos were able to add some runs of their own however, in the third inning, CPP's first of three was scored as a grounder by Kyle Garlick proved too much for the third baseman and scored Christian Kelley, putting the Broncos on the board.

CPP remained scoreless until the ninth inning after that as the Otter's starting pitcher provided eight solid innings on the mound and effectively silenced the Green and Gold's bats. The Broncos ended up with nine hits in the game , led by Kelley who went 2-for-3 and scored a run himself.

The Broncos provided another couple of runs in the ninth and final inning. With two outs, Matt Reynoso earned a pinch hit single to the center fielder. Mike Philp came in to bat and sent a double down the left field line, scoring Reynoso and adding the second Bronco run to the scoreboard. CPP's final run came at the bat of Brennen Salgado who singled to center and sent Philp crossing home, giving the game its final 12-3 result.
