Walkoff Single Boosts Broncos Over Chico

POMONA, Calif. – With a walk off single from Jacob Bernardy in the bottom of the 10th inning, the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team secured a 6-5 victory in game one of the series against the Chico State Wildcats.

Bernardy provided a couple of crunch time hits for the Broncos in the game as he had the walk-off as well as a double off the wall in the bottom of the eighth to pull CPP even with the visiting Wildcats. The freshman went 2-for-4 in the game and had a pair of runs batted in.

Also with stellar games at the plate for the Green and Gold was Christian Kelley, who recorded his fifth consecutive multi-hit game, going 3-for-5 with a RBI and a run scored. Nicholas Bruno also had a multi-hit game, adding two runs to the board himself.

With about one quarter of conference play finished, the Broncos find themselves with an overall 17-6 record, complete with a 9-4 mark in the CCAA. Their tally lands them at third place, just behind Cal State Monterey Bay and UC San Diego.

Starting on the mound for the Broncos was Chris Powell, who ran into a bit of trouble in the first inning as the defending CCAA Champions posted two runs after Powell hit them. The first run scored on a wild pitch and a throwing error allowed run number two across.

Powell went a total of 6.2 innings allowing just those two runs to cross and a mere four hits in the showing. He was given a bit of run support from the CPP offense before Chico would score again.

In the third inning, Kelley doubled to left, sending Bruno home as the Green and Gold's first run in the contest. Inning number six came to be and saw the Broncos score again, this time on a double from Caleb Romo, whose knock scored Nick Cooksey.

CPP would tack on two more runs in the next inning, as Kyle Garlick sent a single arcing down the left field line. He moved Kelley to second on the play, and scored Bruno. The visiting Wildcats didn't have much time to breathe as Cooksey came up and just four pitches later added another hit to the Broncos' tally, scoring Kelley from second and moving Garlick up.

Not to be outdone, the Wildcats posted a few more runs in the top of the eighth inning, pulling the score up to 5-4 in their favor.

With the game potentially on the line, Bernardy came to bat with two outs in the eighth and sent a double to the outfield wall that scored Ryan Webberley from first. That run pulled CPP even and held the game at 5-5 through the remainder of regulation.

The top of the 10th came for the opposition and Zach Williams, who needed just three batters in the ninth to retire the side, dealt the same result in the final inning. He faced just six batters and secured his second win of the season after Bernardy's walk-off.

In the bottom of the inning, with Michael Erb on third after a sacrifice bunt from Webberley and a ground-out from Bruno that moved him to the corner, Bernardy came up with two outs yet again. He sent a high single to center field just too far for the infielders and too short for the outfielders to reach, scoring the Broncos' game-winning run.

CPP will host Chico State in a doubleheader Saturday at Scolinos Field. Game one is set to begin at 11 a.m. with game two following shortly after. The two squads will wrap up the weekend on Sunday.
