Garlick and Romo Homer in Broncos' 7-2 Win

CARSON, Calif. – Kyle Garlick has once again taken the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) lead in the homerun category as he sent out two in Thursday's 7-2 victory over the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros. The senior recorded three hits at the plate today and was one of five Broncos to have multiple hits on the day.

He was joined by Caleb Romo, Michael Zidek, Ryan Webberley, and Nicholas Bruno who each posted two knocks in the contest. Eight of the CPP offensive starters in the game recorded a hit in the showdown.

With the win the Broncos move into second place in the CCAA with a 12-5 record, they also hold an overall 20-7 mark on the season. The Toros now carry an overall 15-14 mark, with a 10-11 win-loss tally in conference play.

In just the second at-bat of the game, Garlick saw just two pitches before launching one over the left field fence. That marked his eighth of the season, pulling him even with the CCAA leader in the category.

Chris Powell, a senior righty pitching out of Upland took the mound for the Broncos; he allowed just four hits through 7.2 innings pitched. The Toros scored just two run in Powell's showing as the CPP starter earned his fourth win of the season and delivered 97 pitches. He also added five strikeouts in the game and gave up just one walk.

In the top of the third inning, this time with Christian Kelley resting comfortably at first, Garlick came up and sent his second shot flying over the fence, again on just the second pitch. After that show CPP held a 3-0 lead over the home town squad. Later in the inning after some beneficial base running for the Green and Gold, Nick Cooksey found his way to third base, only to then cross the plate on a wild pitch by the Dominguez Hills starter.

Romo, the Broncos' designated hitter for the day provided another run of support for CPP in the top of the fifth as he sent out his first career homerun wearing Green and Gold. In the bottom half of that inning, the home team came across their first run of the game with a long sacrifice fly to center field.

In quite the same fashion as their first run, the Toros added another to the board as the bottom of the sixth saw them with a sacrifice fly to left field.

The Broncos' sixth run of the game came in the bottom of the seventh as Bruno sent a single up the middle with the bases loaded, Romo came around to score for the second time in the game and put CPP up 6-2.

In the eighth, the visitors would add their final run to the board as Zidek contributed his second hit for the CPP offense and scored Garlick from second. That run gave the Green and Gold their seventh of the game and the game its final 7-2 result.

After Powell was pulled in the bottom of the eighth, Zach Williams took the bump and dealt the remaining 1.1 innings for CPP. It was his 12th appearance of the year for the Green and Gold.

The Broncos will return to the diamond on Friday as they again play the Toros in Carson. Game two of the series is set to begin at 3:00 p.m.
