Broncos to Defend First Place CCAA Standing

POMONA, Calif. – After moving into first place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) last weekend, the No. 18 Cal Poly Pomona Broncos will protect their lead in a four-game series this week against the Cal State L.A. Golden Eagles.

The series begins Thursday with a 3 p.m. start time at Scolinos Field. It'll be a "Pack the Stands" event for the Broncos and will mark the first-ever CPP Star Wars Day as fans are encouraged to show up and participate in a number of Star Wars related activities. CPP will host again on Friday with another 3 p.m. start.

Overall on the year, the Broncos have a 27-11 record, complete with a 19-9 mark in the CCAA. The Golden Eagles have a 23-13 season tally, and are just a game behind the Green and Gold with an 18-10 conference record.

Looking back at last season, the Broncos did win the series, taking the final three games of the weekend after CSULA posted a win in game one. All–time, the two teams are almost dead even with each other. CPP has won 109 games in the showdown and Cal State L.A. has recorded 106 wins, and there was a tie thrown in as well.

As has been the case through much of the season, the Broncos have a number of people on the conference leaderboards. Christian Kelley leads with a batting average of .412. Also at the top of the CCAA boards with 13 homeruns is Kyle Garlick who also sits at third with 37 Runs Batted In (RBI). In the five spot in the RBI category is Nick Cooksey with 32 for himself.

On the bump, the Broncos have a few standout pitchers. Ryan Olson, Chris Powell, and J.J. Franklin have made things difficult for the opposition. At fourth and fifth in the conference with a 1.59 and 2.07 earned run average, respectively, Olson and Powell lead the way for the CPP starters on the CCAA standings. Olson also sits just one win behind the conference leader as he has six of his own. Franklin still holds a four save lead over the nearest competitor in the conference.

After the two home games, the Broncos will finish the series on the road as they travel to Reeder Field on Cal State L.A.'s campus for a doubleheader on Saturday that is set to begin at 11 a.m.

Postseason Picture
The top four teams in the conference will advance to the CCAA Championships Tournament to be held May 7 through May 10 in Stockton. After that event, the NCAA Tournament field will be announced with the top six West Region squads included. The first NCAA Division II Regional Poll will be released on Wednesday, April 22 on NCAA.com.
