Seventh Inning Scoring Leads to 6-4 Win!

POMONA, Calif. - Another game, another win. The No. 18 Cal Poly Pomona Broncos baseball team secured a 6-4 victory over Cal State L.A. on Friday. CPP now leads the series 2-0 heading into the final day of the series.

Max Bethell started on the bump for the Green and Gold, and despite having a great showing, wherein he allowed a mere one earned run on six hits, he recorded a no decision in the game. The Broncos' captain dealt 5.2 innings and only threw 79 pitches.

The Broncos improve to an overall season tally of 29-11, with a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) record of 21-9 thus far in the 2015 season. The loss drops the Golden Eagles to an overall 23-15 mark on the season, with a conference total of 18-12.

After Bethell finished his showing on the mound, Michael Koval came in for the next 2.1 innings, allowing only two hits and one run to score. That run was CSULA's final run of the game, giving them their four-run total. Austin Boyle came in to close out the game for CPP and earned his second save in as many days.

Offensively the Broncos have a number of standouts in the game. Adding to their tied season tally of games in which they have reached base safely, Kyle Garlick and Christian Kelley both improved that number to 22. Each had a hit, and Garlick added a pair of runs himself, having also reached on a walk.

Overall the Broncos recorded nine hits. Eight members of the CPP starting lineup registered at least one hit, with Jacob Bernardy earning two.

The Green and Gold were first on the board with a Kelley flyout to right that scored Philp on a throwing error by the right fielder.

CSULA posted the next three runs to put them up 3-1 on the home team. Caleb Romo, starting at first base today, doubled down the line in the sixth inning to score Garlick and pull the Broncos just one back. Ryan Webberley then reached on an error by the shortstop and scored Michael Zidek.

The next half inning saw the visitors leadoff hitter send out the long ball, again putting them one up on CPP.

The tenacity of the Broncos became apparent in the next half inning though as they scored three times to give them the lead and the win. Zidek walked with the bases loaded and scored Bernardy, then Matt Muñoz recorded a pinch hit two-run single to score Nick Cooksey and Garlick.

CPP will return to action with the final two games of the series with the Golden Eagles as they travel to Reeder Field for a Saturday doubleheader. Game one is set to begin at 11 a.m.
