CPP Completes 4-Game Sweep of Cal State LA

LOS ANGELES - The No. 18 Cal Poly Pomona Broncos baseball team secured wins in both games of Saturday's twinbill against Cal State L.A. Completing a four-game sweep of the CCAA rival, the Broncos remain in first place atop the conference standings.

CPP cruised to a 13-2 victory in the first game of the day as Ryan Olson secured the win for the Green and Gold. It marks his seventh of the year, bringing both his season and career total as a Bronco up to 7-0.

Game two proved a little bit more difficult for the Broncos, but they topped the Golden Eagles 4-1. Christian Kelley sent out his first long ball of his collegiate career in the game.

The CCAA leading Broncos now hold a season record of 31-11 and have obtained a 23-9 mark in conference play. The losses dropped the Golden Eagles to a 23-17 season tally, complete with 18 wins and 14 losses in the CCAA.

GAME ONE: Broncos 13 - Golden Eagles 2

The first game of the day set the course for CPP as they tied a season high of 13 runs scored. The tally also marks the seventh game of the 2015 season that the Green and Gold have tallied up double-digit runs.

Olson pitched seven innings for the Broncos and allowed just two earned runs to score on six hits. He also fanned 10 of the Golden Eagle batters and threw only 103 pitches. After he had that stellar showing Richie McWilliams came in and finished things off. The final two innings saw McWilliams retire the side in three, throwing a mere 10 pitches and striking out one.

Ryan Webberley racked up three hits and he and Mike Philp each had three runs batted in (RBI) in their performances. Nick Cooksey also recorded three hits in the game, adding a run scored and an RBI.

Kyle Garlick sent out homer number 14 of the season while also going 2-for-5 and recording a pair of runs scored and RBIs. Joining him with a pair of hits was Jacob Bernardy, who contributed a run and RBI himself.

With a hit and run scored was Matt Munoz. Joining the rest of those who scored for CPP in the game were Michael Zidek who added a pair of runs scored and an RBI after walking twice and Kelley who scored and drove in two.

Nicholas Bruno knocked a double and scored twice in the contest in which the Broncos secured the 13-2 victory.

GAME TWO: Broncos 4 - Golden Eagles 1

Cody Ponce pitched a complete game for the Broncos, allowing one run on just five hits. He struckout seven members of the Golden Eagles and walked only one while keeping to just 99 pitches. The righty now holds a 4-1 record on the season.

Munoz and Garlick each had a pair of hits and Kelley, Cooksey, Zidek, Webberley, Michael Erb, and Bernady recorded the other hits for CPP. Kelley scored twice and had an RBI, Zidek scored and had a pair of RBIs, and Munoz posted the final RBI for the Green and Gold.

Kelley provided the Broncos with the first run of the game as he led off with a homerun, his first at the collegiate level. The home team would tie it up in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly to right field, but that run was their final of the series.

In the sixth inning the Broncos took a 3-1 lead. Zidek followed in the long ball footsteps and sent out his first homerun of the year to right center field, scoring both himself and Garlick in the process.

The final run of the game and the series came in the seventh inning as Munoz singled to right and scored Kelley. That gave CPP its fourth run and the sweep.
