POMONA, Calif. - The No. 15 Cal Poly Pomona Broncos secured game one of the final home series 3-1 on Friday. With the win and a loss for Cal State Dominguez Hills, the Broncos secured a spot in the CCAA Postseason Tournament. They defeated the Warriors of Cal State Stanislaus in the contest and continue their lead in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).
Â
With the win, CPP now holds an overall 32-11 tally complete with a 24-9 mark in conference play. The visitors drop to a CCAA record of 14-19 and hold an overall 19-24 tally.
Â
Leading off the series on the bump for the Green and Gold was
Ryan Olson, who secured his eighth win with a 7 inning showing, allowing just one run on a mere three hits. He added five strikeouts and threw 97 pitches in the win. With victory number eight, Olson moves into a three-way tie for the most wins in the CCAA.
Â
Coming out of the bullpen for the Broncos was
Ryan Alsworth and
Michael Koval, the latter of whom received the save.
Â
The CPP offense made quick work of the Warriors' starting pitcher, as he was retired just three innings into the game. In the third, the home squad proved to have a keen eye and drew four straight walks, scoring
Michael Erb after he led off the inning. The next play
Nick Cooksey added another run for the Broncos as a long sacrifice fly brought
Jacob Bernardy home.
Â
The next run in the ballgame would not be scored until the sixth inning when a single through the right side provided the Warriors with the opportunity they needed to wipe the zero off the board.
Â
Scoring the final run in the ball game would again be Bernardy, this time though he scored on a passed ball that found its way behind the catcher. That gave CPP the third run and would give the game its final 3-1 result.
Â
CPP's offense drew seven total walks on the day and a stellar showing from the pitching staff allowed only two walks while adding six strikeouts.
Â
The series between the two squads will continue Saturday with the final regular season doubleheader at Scolinos Field. Game one is set to begin at 11 a.m.Â
