1st Place CPP Vies for Title In Final Series

POMONA, Calif. – With first place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) on the line, Cal Poly Pomona baseball heads into the final weekend of regular season play. The Broncos are vying for their first CCAA season title since 1991.

CPP currently holds a 33-13 season record, complete with a 25-11 mark in conference play. The conference win total of 25 matches the program record and represents the highest total in the last 10 seasons.

The 33 overall wins is the second most in the Randy Betten era, as his first season with CPP (2011) culminated with the Broncos earning 36 wins. It also marks the seventh-highest win total in the program history of 56 seasons.

This season has featured a .717 win percentage, which marks the highest percentage since 1964 and the highest percentage in the Broncos' 47-year run in the CCAA. The Green and Gold's previous high was set last season with a .653 percentage.

The 2014 season ended for the Broncos in the Division II West Region Tournament as they were bested by UC San Diego in their final game.

CPP will be heading up to Maloney Field on the campus of San Francisco State for a four-game series which will start on Friday at 3 p.m. On Saturday the Gators (18-26, 16-20 CCAA) and the Broncos will play a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. and the regular season finale Sunday will be played at 11 a.m.

Currently Kyle Garlick of CPP sits atop the CCAA leaderboard with 14 homeruns and in a close second in conference standings with 43 runs batted in. J.J. Franklin continues his stay on top with 10 saves thus far this season.

Ryan Olson leads the conference with eight wins, claims third place with a 1.67 earned run average (ERA) and fifth with 63 strikeouts. Hovering right around Olson on the boards you will find Chris Powell, who sits just two wins behind him. Powell owns a 1.78 ERA and 64 strikeouts.

Looking at the all-time series between the Broncos and Gators, CPP holds a 56-32 edge. The Broncos won the series last year, taking three of four.

Postseason Picture
The Broncos and the other three top teams in the conference will advance to the CCAA Championships Tournament to be held May 7 through May 10 in Stockton. After that event, the NCAA Tournament field will be announced with the top six West Region squads included.
