NCAA West Regional Bracket
| Tournament CentralWALNUT, Calif. – After a jewel of an outing for
Ryan Olson and a dominating showing at the plate for the offense, the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team secured a 12-0 rout over Point Loma on Friday morning.
Because of rain through Thursday's action, the scheduled start for the Broncos and Sea Lions was moved to 10 a.m. Friday. That schedule change didn't seem to affect Olson, who tossed eight innings of one-hit and shutout ball while collecting four strikeouts. It marked the longest outing of the season for the sophomore righthander.
Starring at the plate was shortstop
Ryan Webberley, who went 3-for-5 with three runs batted in that included a solo homerun.
With the victory in their first 2015 NCAA West Regional game, the Broncos advance to play Dixie State at 5 p.m. Friday. The double-elimination format puts CPP (1-0) up against the Red Storm (0-1) of the PacWest Conference.
The Broncos improve to 40-14 overall, marking the most wins in program history since the 1983 season. CPP owns a four-game winning streak, dating back to the start of the conference tournament last week in Stockton. With a stellar performance Friday morning, Olson improved his season record to 11-0.
CPP wasted no time getting on the board as
Christian Kelley led off the game with walk and was immediately followed by
Kyle Garlick getting hit by the pitch and
Nick Cooksey sending a single up the middle that got by the centerfielder and scored two.
After an unfortunate error by Webberley that didn't end up costing the Broncos anything, he more than made up for it. He led off the second inning with a solo shot to left field, marking the only homerun thus far in the Tournament.
The next few innings remained quiet on either side until the Green and Gold added another run to the board with a
Nicholas Bruno single through the left side that scored
Matt Muñoz and gave the Broncos the 4-0 lead.
CPP, the No.1 seed in the regional, put the game out of reach in the bottom half of the seventh inning as they posted a total of six runs. The Broncos recorded four-straight hits as Kelley, Garlick, and Cooksey each singled. Cooksey's hit scored Kelley and left runners at first and second for
Michael Zidek. The Broncos' right fielder then doubled down he left field line and added two runs batted in to his resume for the game.
Mike Philp was then hit by a pitch and two runners were once again on for the Broncos. Webberley hit his double and both Philp and Zidek crossed the plate. Bruno then registered his second RBI on the day as he singled to left and allowed Webberley the chance and means to score.
CPP wasn't done after the 10th run scored however and went on to gain their final two runs in the eighth. The Broncos led off the inning with a Garlick double and a Cooksey walk. A wild pitch moved them both over and so with two runners in scoring position Zidek would again add a couple of runs to the board. Zidek was 3-for-5 on the day with four RBI and one run scored.
Wyatt Shackleford came in to finish things off for Olson and pitched the ninth inning. With four total batters faced he racked up two strikeouts and allowed a mere one hit.
