WALNUT, Calif. – Win No. 41 is in the books for Cal Poly Pomona baseball as the Broncos defeated
California Baptist 6-4 in the first game of the day on Saturday. The 2015 CPP squad now has the most wins in program history since 1983.
With the victory, the Broncos advance to play Azusa Pacific at 7 pm Saturday. The Green and Gold improved their season tally to 41-15. In the process, the Lancers' season ends with a 31-22 record.
Chris Powell started on the bump for CPP, the designated visiting team in the contest. He was only able to provide 3.1 innings for the Green and Gold and was pulled after giving up three earned runs.
Max Bethell came in to the game to relieve the senior starter. Team captain Bethell recorded the win as he allowed no earned runs to score on three hits.
Heading to the mound in the bottom of the eighth for the Broncos was
Austin Boyle, the senior righty closed out the game's final two innings and only allowed one hit. He earned the save in the showing, hit fourth of the season.
The Green and Gold were first to cross the plate as they posted a run in the top of the second inning.
Ryan Webberley drew a walk and then
Nicholas Bruno launched a long triple over the right-fielder's head. It was Bruno's first triple of the season and his career as a Bronco.
CBU, as not to be outdone, came back to tie and pull ahead by one as a single and subsequent double scored two runs for them. In the third they added what would usually be a safety run on a double down the left field line, pushing them up 3-1.
The Broncos, who are quite lethal when stringing together hits proved so again in the fifth as they added three runs to go ahead by one.
Christian Kelley, who was 2-for-5 on the day, singled to left and moved over on a
Michael Zidek single up the middle. Matt Munoz drew a walk to load the bases and a wild pitch gave CPP enough time to score its second run. Webberley, who was 2-for-4 with two runs batted in and a run scored quickly doubled down the left field line to score two more and push the Broncos ahead for the second time in the game.
CPP's bats were not silent after the lead was taken however and two more runs would cross in the top of the sixth. Bruno reached on a throwing error, Garlick singled to center and gave Bruno enough time to score, 5-3 CPP. Kelley then doubled and scored Garlick came home, 6-3 CPP.
CBU was able to post one more run as a single by their catcher collected run No. 4, giving the game its final 6-4 score.
