Maximum Effort Leads to 11-2 Win for CPP

D-II National Championships
Bracket | Tournament Central | Postgame Press Conference

CARY, N.C. – Tossing a no-hitter through six innings and getting plenty of run support, Max Bethell pitched a 7.2-inning gem Thursday while guiding the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team to an 11-2 win over No. 2-ranked Catawba at the NCAA Division II World Series.

With the Broncos (46-16 overall) and Indians now owning one loss apiece this week, the same two teams will meet Friday in a 12 p.m. Pacific (3 p.m. Eastern) matchup.

Friday's winner will play Tampa (3-0 in Cary) on Saturday for the NCAA D-II title and based on the double-elimination format, the Cal Poly Pomona/Catawba winner will need to defeat Tampa twice Saturday to capture the crown.

CPP has scored 33 runs in the World Series so far while accounting for almost 40 percent of the runs total this week from the entire eight-team field.

Each member of the Broncos' starting squad recorded a hit in Thursday's game, and CPP was led in that respect by Kyle Garlick with his four knocks on the day. The Green and Gold posted a total of 16 hits in the game.

Also posting multi-hit games on Friday were Ryan Webberley (3-for-5), Mike Philp (2-for-4) and Nick Cooksey (2-for-5). Philp also played tremendous defensively, chasing down multiple foul balls and catching them on the run along the fence.

Bronco fans, with some making the 2,500 mile trek to North Carolina and others packing the Bronco Student Center on the CPP campus, erupted in cheers in the top of the third inning when their team got on the scoreboard. A throwing error by the Catawba pitcher sent the ball careening past the third baseman and allowed Jacob Bernardy and Garlick to both score.

The Bronco offense remained hot as Philp sent a long double down the left field line to score Christian Kelley. Keeping up on the CPP momentum, Webberley sent a liner to the left field wall to rack up a three-bagger. Then, making his second start in as many days, Brennen Salgado singled through the right side to score Webberley and put CPP up 5-0 heading into the bottom half of the third.

The West Region champions added another run to the board in the top half of the fourth as Cooksey launched one to the right-center warning track to push CPP ahead by six. Scoring on the play was Garlick after providing the Broncos with his third hit of the game. To quote the NCAA.com play-by-play crew, "Cal Poly Pomona is just putting on a clinic."
In the sixth inning, the stellar CPP offense continued their run production. Bernardy led off the inning drawing a walk and then Garlick collected hit No. 4 on the day. Kelley followed that up with a sacrifice bunt and a throwing error on the play allowed Bernardy to score from second.

Cooksey, a captain of the Broncos, recorded his second double of the contest with another shot to the warning track. His blast scored Kelley and Garlick. Matt Munoz came up with a clutch single to center field to score Kelley.

Munoz then added his first knock of the game while bringing Kelley home. A new pitcher for the Indians was then brought in and Philp sent a long sac fly to center and Cooksey scored. CPP's final run of the inning came at the hands of Salgado, who mirrored Philp and sent a long sac fly to right center to bring Munoz home. At the middle of the sixth, the score stood 11-0 in favor of the Broncos.

The Indians managed to get on the board in the bottom of the eighth as a single followed by a two-run homerun by Malachi Hanes put a couple of runs on the board and gave the game its final 11-2 score.
