Two-Run Eighth Boosts Broncos to Victory

STOCKTON, Calif. – Yogi-ism of the day: "It ain't over until it's over". The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team proved the statement true Friday after posting two runs in the eighth inning to snag a 2-1 victory from the UC San Diego Tritons.

After a round one victory over the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros, the Broncos were matched against the only other undefeated team in the tournament and pulled off a 2-1 win. Both Green and Gold runs in round two came in the eighth inning and allowed CPP to swoop in and take the game.

The Broncos will advance to round three as the only undefeated team in the tournament and will play on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. against Saturday's 3:00 p.m. game winner. They were either play the Tritons or the Toros.

Cody Ponce started on the bump for the Broncos and did a stellar job, throwing four complete and allowing just one run on three hits. The run came in the second inning as an unfortunate throwing error enabled the UCSD squad member to cross.

The chances were there for both teams to blow the game open as runner after runner was left on base. A total of nine Broncos were walked to tack onto their five hits. There were also five Tritons walked with their five hits.

UCSD, whose fortuitous coin-flip named them the home team of the game threw a total of seven pitchers. After their starter came out in the fifth, six members of the bullpen took the bump.

CPP's two-run eighth started off with Ryan Webberley reaching first on a dropped third strike. Mike Philp then came up and recorded his second knock of the day. Nicholas Bruno hit a hard shot but the ball went to third to gun out Webberley. Then a passed ball advanced Philp to third and Jacob Bernardy came in clutch with a ground-ball to short that scored Philp. The very next play was a wild pitch and that scored Bruno. With that the game's final 2-1 score was on the board.
