STOCKTON, Calif. - The Cal Poly Pomona Broncos baseball team clinched its first ever California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championships tournament title with a 4-0 win over the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros on Saturday.
Â
The Broncos went 3-0 through the double-elimination tournament while completing a sweep of the conference's regular season and tournament titles.
CPP will now await the Sunday 7 p.m. selection show to be aired on
NCAA.com/liveschedule. At 39-14 overall, the Broncos were ranked at No. 1 in the West Region in the most recent poll. The top six teams from the region will advance.
Â
Chris Powell began on the mound for the Broncos Saturday and he dealt a total of 5 innings and had a stellar outing. He posted seven strikeouts while allowing only one hit and zero runs to score. He exited with a 1-0 lead as the Green and Gold were able to record a run in the first inning.
Â
In the first inning, the Broncos, who had defeated the Toros in the tourney's first round, scored as
Matt Muñoz singled to the right fielder. In the process
Nick Cooksey was able to score, putting CPP up 1-0.
Â
After Powell exited, the CPP coaching staff did have a bit of a field day and brought in a total of six more pitchers.
J.J. Franklin,
Ryan Alsworth,
Zach Williams,
Erik Trask,
Wyatt Shackleford, and
Michael Koval all came in to relieve the Broncos with appearances on the mound.
Â
In the seventh inning CPP posted a couple more runs, Cooksey singled to left and scored
Kyle Garlick. After the second run, Munoz would again come in clutch and registered a sacrifice fly that scored Cooksey.
Â
If those runs weren't enough, the Green and Gold posted another in the ninth as Cooksey singled and scored
Christian Kelley.
Â
The Broncos' stupendous offense had a great day at the plate, posting a total of 15 hits in the contest. To which the CPP defense answered by allowing just four.
At the culmination of the game, the All-Tournament team was announced and five Broncos were recognized for their efforts. Munoz, Cooksey, Garlick, Powell, and
Michael Zidek were given the honors. With his phenomenal job for CPP on the weekend, Zidek was also named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.
Â
The Broncos won the contest and can say that they won both the CCAA regular season and the CCAA postseason. The regular season title marked the first since 1991, while the postseason title came as the first one in program history.
