Four Broncos Inducted Into Hall of Fame Friday

POMONA, Calif. - In an event filled with celebration and storytelling, the Cal Poly Pomona Intercollegiate Athletics department inducted four Broncos into the Hall of Fame at the "Evening of Champions" on Friday.

The Class of 2016 included Jeff Bonds, Debra Larsen, Tony Reyes and Mark Wiley. University President Soraya Coley spoke at the beginning of Friday's event and congratulated the newest class of inductees.

"Having just completed my first year and embracing the theme of "The impossible made possible"… tonight's celebration has it all in one place," Coley said. "From our current Hall of Fame members who established the foundation for athletic success, to our soon-to-be inducted Hall of Fame class, to our current student-athletes who continue to set the bar higher and higher in the classroom and in competition."

With 160 other guests in attendance at the Bronco Student Center, the Broncos also welcomed back eight of the past Hall of Fame members: Gary Burnett, Ernest Gee, Tabreshia Lawrence-McIntyre, Musiette McKinney, Lorelee Miller, Ruth Van't Land-Parkes, Jim Sackett and Lisa Ulmer.

"Our newest class: Mark, Debra, Tony and Jeff  – you are joining an elite class of student-athletes and we couldn't be happier for you," Director of Athletics Brian Swanson said. "It's wonderful to be able to recognize you tonight in front of family, teammates and friends. Congratulations!"

Class of 2016

Arguably the greatest player in Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball history, Jeff Bonds helped the Broncos advance to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight on two different occasions. His time as a Bronco earned him a number of honors, the highest of which was an All-American nod after his stellar performance in the 2004-05 season. After his time at CPP, Bonds had a long professional career playing basketball in Europe.

One of the most decorated athletes in Cal Poly Pomona's history, Debra Larsen became a seven-time All-American while starring in basketball and track and field. She was a two-sport athlete for the Broncos as she competed in both basketball and track and field. She was a member of two national championship squads in basketball, helping the Broncos to the national title in both 1985 and 1986. In 1986, Larsen was also the NCAA D-II National Champion in the heptathlon.

As one of the top distance runners in the history of Cal Poly Pomona, Tony Reyes led the men's cross country team to an NCAA National Championship in 1983. Also starring in track and field, this runner received All-American recognition in all four years of competition. In total, he finished as a two-time All-American in cross country and five-time All-American in track and field. Later in his professional career, Reyes coached at Cal Poly Pomona for 10 years.

As one of the most successful pitchers in Cal Poly Pomona baseball history, Mark Wiley had numerous accolades during his time as a Bronco from 1968 through 1970. In his final season with the Broncos in 1970, Wiley led the nation with 15 wins and 170 strikeouts. His performance during that season earned him a spot on the All-CCAA First Team. His 170 strikeouts still stands as CPP's single-season record.
