Broncos To Split Host Duties with Cal State LA

By Aaron Salazar

POMONA, Calif. – With a mere three series left in the 2016 regular season, the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team looks to build on its South Division lead in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).

The Broncos were featured at No. 4 in the most recent West Region rankings released by the National Collegiate Baseball Writer's Association (NCBWA) on April 18. The first official regional poll from the NCAA will be revealed on April 27.

This week, CPP will play a four-game series against Cal State L.A. beginning on Thursday.

This series will be split between Reeder Field in Los Angeles and Scolinos Field in Pomona. Game times for Thursday and Friday are 6 p.m. in Los Angeles. The Saturday doubleheader is slated for 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. at CPP.

The Broncos enter the week with an overall record of 24-13 complete with a 16-9 showing in CCAA play to lead the South Division. Last weekend, the Broncos secured a series victory with wins of 9-2 in game one on Saturday and a 10-7 win on Sunday over the Chico State Wildcats.

CSULA, who dropped two of three games to Sonoma State last week, owns a 9-26 overall record on the season. The Golden Eagles have tallied an 8-16 showing in CCAA games.

The all-time record between these two freeway rivals favors the Green and Gold with an overall record of 113-106-1.

Broncos' righty Michael Koval earned his second CCAA Pitcher of the Week recognition for his performance last week. Koval secured a victory over the CCAA North Division leader Chico State on Saturday and improved his record to 6-2 while lowering his ERA to 2.26.

Designated hitter Caleb Romo had a solid series against the Wildcats as well. He hit two home runs, scored five runs and drove home six in the three game series. He also drew two walks.

Upon completion of this week's series, the Green and Gold will have eight games left before the CCAA Tournament in Stockton. They will play Cal State San Bernardino and Cal State Dominguez Hills in four-game series. The CSUSB series is scheduled from April 28-30 and the CSUDH series will be played from May 5-7.
