Huerta Earns All-American; Tate Places 16th

NCAA D-II National Championships Results

BRADENTON, Fla. -
In the last race of her collegiate career, Lizette Huerta shined bright in the national spotlight while breaking a Cal Poly Pomona record.

Placing fourth in the 1,500-meter race at the NCAA Division II National Championships, Huerta earned All-American honors. Her time of 4:24.64 also set a new Cal Poly Pomona record at that distance. She is the seventh CPP female student-athlete to receive the All-American accolade for the 1,500-meter distance.

A senior from Ontario, Huerta is a Colony High School graduate. She has also already earned her undergraduate degree in Kinesiology from CPP and is currently pursuing her teacher's credential with the Broncos.

Also in action on Saturday in Florida was fourth-year javelin star Tiffany Tate. With a top throw of 145-1, the Poway native placed 16th overall among the top D-II competitors. Tate earned CPP Female Athlete of the Year on Monday at the annual Broncos' Evening of Excellence banquet.

"Lizette had been to this meet two times before this but she wasn't going to be denied the All-American honor this time," head coach Octavious Gillespie-Bennett said. "Tiffany dealt with a tough field in the javelin but we are incredibly proud of her season and performance as well."
