POMONA, Calif. – Undefeated in its last three matches, the Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team will play three contests this week.
First up is a 7 p.m. showdown on Tuesday with Fresno Pacific. In the latest NCAA Division II national rankings, the Broncos are featured at No. 23 and the Sunbirds are at No. 15. The home game will mark the last non-conference game of the regular season for CPP. The Sunbirds are the defending champions of the PacWest Conference. So far this year, FPU is 1-1-1.
The Broncos and Sunbirds played each other in the 2015 season opener, when the two squads played to a 2-2 draw in Fresno.
Sergi Monso scored the go-ahead goal but FPU rallied for the equalizer before the contest settled in a tie.
This weekend, the Broncos will travel to Northern California to begin California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play. CPP takes on Sonoma State (0-1-3) on Friday at 3 p.m. and then plays at Humboldt State (2-1-1) on Sunday at 2 p.m.
The Broncos' defense has held strong through the first five matches, allowing just three goals in that span. Ranking No. 1 and No. 2 on the team in minutes are goalkeeper
Jason Trejos and defender
Nadeer Ghantous. CPP has posted three shutouts, including back-to-back blank scoresheets last week against Cal State L.A. and Azusa Pacific.
The centerpieces of the Broncos' offense have been
Dante Medina and Monso, who have collected two goals apiece. The assist leaders are
Kevin Martinez and
Jordan Jackmon as the pair assisted on both of the scores on Saturday in the 2-1 win over Dominican.
The Fall Quarter begins for CPP students next Thursday, Sept. 22. One day later, Broncos' men's soccer will host San Francisco at 4:30 p.m. as part of a doubleheader with the women's soccer program. Through a sponsorship with University Housing Services, free tumblers will be distributed to the first 100 CPP students who arrive.
