POMONA, Calif. – After securing a double-overtime road win on Sunday, the Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team looks to build on the momentum with a pair of home matches this week.
The Broncos are set to host San Francisco State on Friday at 7 p.m. under the lights at Kellogg Field. Then on Sunday, CPP takes on Cal State Monterey Bay at 2 p.m.
So far this year, the Broncos are 2-3-1 overall and 1-1-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). Friday's opponent – SFSU – is at the top of the conference standings with a 2-0 mark through the first week. The Gators are 5-1-1 overall in 2016.
The Otters of CSUMB have also played well, posting an overall record of 4-2 and going 1-1 in league action. The first 100 CPP students to arrive on Sunday will receive a free tumbler courtesy of University Housing Services. As part of the doubleheader, the men's game begins at 11:30 a.m.
Senior midfielder
Hailey James, a Glendale native, proved to be the hero on Sunday in Arcata as her header in the 105th minute lifted CPP to a 2-1 win over the Jacks.
Despite playing shorthanded at that point in the match, CPP didn't back away from its pursuit of the victory.
Hannah Havelind sent a strong header that was punched out by the HSU goalkeeper. The rebound chance deflected to James, who knocked in a header for the game winner.
Broncos' netminder
Ricki Ives collected a season-high eight saves on Sunday. She is now at No. 9 on the CPP all-time leaderboard for career saves with 145. Sunday's win also marked the first CCAA victory for first-year head coach
Jay Mason.
