7th-Ranked Broncos Fall to Coyotes in Series Opener

Box Score | POMONA, Calif. - The No. 7 Cal Poly Pomona baseball team couldn't get its offense going Thursday at Scolinos Field as the Broncos suffered a 3-0 loss to Cal State San Bernardino in the series opener.

Coyotes' senior lefthander Kerry Kelley tossed a complete-game shutout, allowing just five hits and two walks in his nine innings pitched. The CPP hitters certainly made it interesting in the bottom of the ninth as they loaded the bases with one out before back-to-back fly outs ended the contest.

In that final turn at the plate, Joseph Eusebio collected a clutch hit while David Armendariz and Bo Walter tallied walks to help extend the rally. Defensive miscues hurt the Broncos' chances earlier in the game as three errors were committed Thursday.

CPP righthander Steven Farnworth put together another quality start, logging 6.1 innings with zero walks and four strikeouts. He allowed three runs but all were credited as unearned.

The Coyotes' situational hitting gave them an edge on Thursday as the visiting squad scored two of its three runs on sacrifice fly outs. Nolan Almodovar recorded one in the fifth to deliver the first run of the game. No. 9 hitter Damion Edmonds contributed a sac fly of his own in the seventh, extending CSUSB's lead to 2-0.

After a pair of pitching changes for the Broncos in the top of the seventh, William Ouellette knocked a double down the line off CPP reliever Andy Amaro and that brought in Warren Fishback to score. Kevin Meriwether also tried to reach home but a strong relay from Armendariz to Trevor Magno and then to Mike Philp for a tag that ended the rally.

With Farnworth totaling 6.1 innings Thursday, the Bronco bullpen trio of RJ Shanks, Amaro and Chris Powell contributed scoreless outings.

Leading the Coyotes' offense Thursday were Aaron Owen and Edmonds, who contributed two hits apiece.

The two teams will resume the series Friday with a 3 p.m. first pitch at Scolinos Field.
