Box Score | POMONA, Calif. - In a true team effort Friday at Scolinos Field, Cal Poly Pomona used five pitchers and got at least one baserunner from each of the nine lineup spots to capture a 6-3 home win over Cal State San Bernardino.
The result evens the series at one victory apiece and now the two teams will resume play on Saturday with an 11 a.m. doubleheader at San Bernardino's
Fiscalini Field. With several California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) squads still playing Friday night, the Broncos remain in fourth place at 18-8 in league play. Meanwhile, the CSUSB marks settle at 10-26 overall and 8-18 in CCAA action.
CPP fans witnessed a bit of history during the win over the Coyotes. Junior righthander
J.J. Franklin earned his seventh save of 2014, setting a new single-season record for the Broncos.Â
The CPP bullpen limited the CSUSB offense to just one run in the final 5.1 innings, including a strong three-inning effort from
Austin Boyle that improved his 2014 mark to 3-0. Seniors
RJ Shanks and
Andy Amaro contributed scoreless outings, recording two outs each.
Friday's game featured a bit of everything, with some close calls and tense moments.
Chris Carlson ignited the Broncos' attack and ended up reaching base in three of his four plate appearances. He delivered with an RBI single in the first inning and then drove another run in during the second on a sacrifice fly.
The 2-0 CPP lead disappeared quickly though as the Coyotes took advantage of some infield hits and sac bunts to manufacture one run in each of the third and fourth innings to even the score at 2-2.
Carlson played a key role in the Broncos regaining the advantage. With two outs in the bottom of the fourth, he attempted a stolen base with the intention of getting into a rundown while
David Armendariz tried to race home from third. The play worked to perfection and CPP jumped in front 3-2. Freshman
Steven Andrade gave the Broncos a bit more breathing room with an RBI double in the fifth that allowed
Joseph Eusebio to score.
Although CSUSB rallied to cut the lead to 4-3, CPP responded with clutch RBI singles from
Bo Walter and Armendariz to build the lead back up to 6-3 before Franklin entered in the ninth. After a leadoff single in the top of the ninth, the Coyotes had the potential tying run on deck. Franklin closed the game out strong though, getting a groundball out to Walter to wrap up the three-run victory.
Despite a strong effort in middle relief, Coyotes' Ruben Rios suffered the loss and dropped to 2-2 on the season. CSUSB outfielder Remington Miller matched Zidek's 3-for-3 performance after entering the game off the bench.
