CPP Powers Past Gators, Moves Back Into Third Place

Box Score | POMONA, Calif. - The 10th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona baseball team used a big sixth-inning rally and impressive pitching to capture a 6-3 victory over San Francisco State in the series finale Sunday at Scolinos Field.

David Armendariz, the league leader in homeruns, launched his sixth of the season to cap off that CPP rally. Jake Menzhuber and Andy Amaro kept the Gators' offense scoreless through 8.1 innings and the Broncos' bullpen survived a dramatic ninth inning to close out the win.

With the result, CPP moves into a tie for third place in the conference standings. The Broncos own a winning percentage of .708 thanks to a 17-7 mark in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). UC San Diego has an identical record in CCAA play. Sonoma State is in first place while Chico State is at the No. 2 position.

The heart of the CPP lineup delivered on Sunday as it did throughout the entire series. Chris Carlson's hit streak is now at seven games as he collected three hits Sunday for a total of six in the series. His teammate Joseph Eusebio managed to fare even better as he carries an eight-game hit streak with three hits Sunday and a total of eight against SFSU.

From 2011 through this season - the length of head coach Randy Betten's tenure at CPP - the Broncos have won each of their series with the Gators by a 3-1 tally for a series advantage of 12-4. This year, SFSU owns marks of 13-21 overall and 8-16 in CCAA action.

Menzhuber, a lefty from Mission Viejo, contributed a strong start Sunday for CPP. He retired the first six batters he faced and ended up with a scoreless outing of 4.1 innings. Through that time, Menzhuber allowed just two hits and collected two strikeouts.

Amaro entered in the top of the fifth inning and immediately received some great defensive help from his teammates. The Gators put down a suicide squeeze bunt but third baseman Steven Andrade retrieved in a hurry and got the forceout at home to keep the score tied 0-0. Amaro ended up holding SFSU hitless through his four innings of work.

The Broncos set up their sixth-inning rally by loading the bases with just one out. To get to that spot, Eusebio and Andrade contributed singles and Nick Cooksey added a walk. After the Gators went to the bullpen for Cory Davis, CPP pinch hittter Michael Zidek delivered an RBI hit for the game's first run. The next hitter - Trevor Magno - also singled before Bo Walter drove in the team's third run on a fielder's choice groundout.

Armendariz's three-run homer later in the inning broke the game open at 6-0 but SFSU didn't back down from the challenge in the ninth. In that final frame, the Gators tallied two hits and two walks to pull to within 6-3 but Austin Boyle recorded the final out of the game to earn his third save of the season.

The Broncos will continue their homestand on Thursday with a 3 p.m. game against Cal State San Bernardino.
