Volleyball Begins CCAA Play on Friday at Kellogg Gym

POMONA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team will open conference play Friday with a 7 p.m. home match against Chico State.

The Broncos hold a 2-1 record so far this season, having completed three matches in Seattle last weekend. Last year, Chico went 16-13 overall while posting a 13-9 mark in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).

Based on the two teams splitting the 2013 season series, Friday's CCAA opener at Kellogg Gym should prove to be an exciting start to the conference schedule. The Wildcats played in the same Seattle Pacific Invitational last weekend and capped off their weekend with a 3-0 sweep of Western Oregon.

On the first day of the 2014 season, CPP captured a pair of comeback victories. After falling behind 1-0 to Seattle Pacific, the Broncos rallied for a 3-1 victory behind a 17-kill performance from Lauren Jones. In an evening contest, CPP trailed Western Oregon 2-1 but stormed back to capture a 3-2 win.

At the conclusion of the tournament, junior middle blocker Christen Williams earned a spot on the SPU All-Tournament Team. Through three matches, she posted a hitting percentage of .395 and recorded 0.92 blocks per set.

Also receiving recognition for her performances last weekend was freshman Deanna Blaine. The La Habra Heights native earned selection as a BroncoAthletics.com Athlete of the Week after collecting 31 kills and six service aces while adding 33 digs defensively.

With most 2014 home matches on Friday and Saturday instead of the previous format of Thursday and Saturday, the Broncos will make a quick return to the Kellogg Gym court with a Saturday match against Cal State Stanislaus. As usual, first serve is set for 7 p.m. To start CCAA play, the Warriors will challenge UC San Diego Friday before traveling to Pomona.
