Powell, Boyle Overpower Cal State L.A.

POMONA, Calif. – It was a low scoring game at Scolinos Field on Thursday but the No. 18 Cal Poly Pomona Broncos came away with a 2-1 victory over California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) rival Cal State L.A.

With stellar pitching performances from both sides, the win was hard fought for the Green and Gold as Chris Powell earned the win and Austin Boyle recorded the save.

The Broncos improve to an overall season tally of 28-11 with a CCAA record of 20-9. A mere two games behind them in conference play is the Golden Eagles as they hold an 18-11 mark in the CCAA and have a season mark of 23-14.

Powell provided the Broncos with his third 7.2 inning appearance as he threw just 114 pitches and allowed eight hits and one run. He racked up five strikeouts which moved him up to 58 on the season. He now holds a 5-2 record in 2015.

Closing things out for the home team after Zach Williams relieved the CPP starter was Austin Boyle who dealt 1.1 innings. He didn't allow a single member of the CSULA squad to reach base and struck out two of the four batters he faced. He earned the save for the performance, his first of the season.

Offensively, the visitors to Scolinos Field were first on the board after a single in the sixth inning provided their baserunner with the room he needed to come around and score.

The bottom of the seventh proved to be the only offensive inning the Broncos needed as both of their runs came in the half. To lead things off for CPP, Nicholas Bruno singled. He was moved over as Jacob Bernardy laid down a beautiful sacrifice bunt. Christian Kelley, the Broncos and the CCAA's batting average leader came up next and doubled to score Bruno.

Kyle Garlick, who along with Kelley improved his reach-base-safely streak to 21 games, was intentionally walked, bringing Nick Cooksey to bat. Cooksey singled through the right side and advanced Garlick to third but unfortunately the innings' second out came as Kelley was thrown out trying to take home on the play. Michael Zidek came in clutch for the Broncos and singled to right to score Garlick and give CPP the final 2-1 score.

The series will continue Friday at Scolinos Field with a 3 p.m. start time and then Saturday will see both teams head to Reeder Field on Cal State LA's campus for the final two games.
