POMONA, Calif. – With a second place national finish on Saturday, the Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team announces their two All-American honorees this season.
This 2015 season, the Broncos earned an overall 17-3-3 record while making history for the CPP men's soccer program. The historic season saw the Green and Gold win the program's first-ever NCAA playoff game, the California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament for the second-consecutive season, its first ever West-Region Tournament title, a victory in the Final Four, and a trip to the national championship game.
Fueling the Broncos was a number of players, as the team has acted as a single unit all season, but two members of the CPP squad stood out in particular.
Earning a spot on the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-America Second Team was senior defender
Justyn Peeples. The Riverside native was a stellar defensive standout for the Broncos this season. His efforts contributed to the Broncos limiting opponents to just 18 goals in the first 22 games of the season.
Peeples' defensive work on the field have helped keep the Green and Gold undefeated at Kellogg Field in the past two seasons. To add to his importance on the field, the defender also provided his CPP teammates with a pair of goals and a pair of assists, good for a total of six points. Peeples also earned a spot on the All-West Region First Team for both the NSCAA and the CCA and the All-CCAA First Team.
Making the NSCAA All-America First Team was senior forward
Christian Gonzalez Diaz. Since transferring from CSUN a couple years ago, the Mission Viejo native has done a stellar job on offense for the Broncos. This season, he racked up a conference-leading 13 goals as well as contributing five assists for a total of 31 points on the season.
Earlier this week, the Gonzalez Diaz was named the West Region's Player of the Year. He was also named to the All-West Region First Team for both the NSCAA and CCA. At the CCAA Banquet in early November, the senior was named to the All-CCAA First team, and was named the CCAA's Offensive Player of the Year for the second-consecutive season.
The Broncos did their community and fans proud this season as they made it to the NCAA Division II Title match against undefeated Pfeiffer University. Despite the loss, the Broncos' 2015 team will go down as the farthest reaching team in program history. With their four NCAA postseason wins, the Green and Gold also earned the program's first four postseason wins. The only other time the squad earned a spot in the NCAA postseason was in 1998 where they fell short in the first game.
