ST. GEORGE, Utah - The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team cruised past Dixie State Friday, earning a 10-2 victory on the Opening Day of the 2015 season.
The Broncos' offense collected 12 hits, including multi-hit performances from
Nick Cooksey,
Jason Padlo and
Ryan Webberley in the 5-6-7 spots of the lineup. Making their CPP debuts, Webberley and
Kyle Garlick knocked homeruns in the victory.
Making his third-consecutive Opening Day start, junior
Max Bethell tossed four innings and allowed just one run while striking out four. On a predetermined pitch count, Bethell earned the victory - the 13th of his career - to improve to 3-0 in Opening Day starts.
The Broncos' bullpen put together a stellar effort as three relievers closed out the win for the visitors.
Michael Koval tossed three innings while
Austin Boyle and
Zach Williams each pitched one scoreless frame.Â
CPP ruined the Dixie debut of Porter Clayton, a teammate of Garlick's at Oregon last year. Clayton lasted 4.2 innings, allowing two hits and four walks. He struck out six Broncos in that span.
The Red Storm broke through for the game's first run in the second inning, as Donald Glover crossed home plate after a balk was called on Bethell. The CPP offense, despite being held scoreless through the first three frames, broke through for its 10 runs in the next five innings.
With no runners on base and two outs in the top of the 4th,
Michael Zidek initiated a Broncos' rally with a walk and a stolen base. Cooksey provided an RBI single and Webberley followed it up with a two-run triple.Â
The same portion of the CPP lineup proved potent once again in the sixth. Zidek lined a leadoff double on the first pitch he saw and then Cooksey tripled down the line on a 2-0 offering. Webberley battled to a 3-2 count and on the 12th pitch of the at-bat, he homered to give the Broncos their 6-1 edge.
CPP continued its two-out efficiency in the 8th inning as pinch hitter
Brennen Salgado doubled in
Jacob Bernardy to provide the Broncos' final run of the contest.
On Saturday, CPP and Dixie State will start a doubleheader at 10 a.m. Pacific.
