Broncos Sweep Saturday Doubleheader at Dixie

ST. GEORGE, Utah - The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team continued its strong start to the 2015 season on Saturday, sweeping a road doubleheader at Dixie State.

The first game featured a pitching duel between CPP's Chris Powell and Dixie's Chance Abrath. The Broncos took a late lead in the eighth as Jason Padlo knocked in the eventual game-winning run for the 4-2 victory. J.J. Franklin earned his 10th career save, matching a school record set in 1966.

The second half of the doubleheader proved to be a bit easier for CPP, as the visitors collected 14 hits in the 10-4 rout. Rightfielder Michael Zidek went 3-for-4 out of the cleanup spot while Ryan Webberley, Kyle Garlick and Mike Philp added multi-hit performances.

With the results, the Broncos improved to 3-0 overall while dropping the Red Storm to 0-3. The two teams will play their series finale on Sunday at 10 a.m. Pacific.

Game One: Broncos 4, Red Storm 2

After five scoreless innings, including a one-hit outing by Powell, Garlick put CPP on the board with a two-run homer in the sixth. Dixie bounced back though to tie the game in their next at-bat. Meanwhile, Powell finished his performance with a career-high five strikeouts while making his first start since 2013.

The decisive rally came in the 8th inning after Webberley and Garlick were hit by pitches to open the frame. Zidek moved the runners over with a sacrifice bunt and then with two outs, Padlo delivered a clutch base hit to put the Broncos ahead 3-2.

CPP added an insurance run in the ninth when Webberley singled in Matt Muñoz, who reached on a one-out double. Ryan Olson earned his first win as a Bronco and Austin Boyle contributed a scoreless relief inning before Franklin took over.

Game Two: Broncos 10, Red Storm 4

The second game featured a few lead changes early on, before the Broncos broke through for eight runs in the middle innings to put the contest out of reach. Zidek put CPP on the board with a first-inning run, lining a 3-2 two-out pitch to bring in Garlick.

After a Red Storm solo homer put the host squad ahead 2-1 in the second frame, the Broncos put together a big four-run rally in the top of the third. A pair of Dixie errors helped CPP gain baserunners and then Webberley and Garlick combined for back-to-back RBI hits. With two outs, Jacob Bernardy worked a hitter's count and then lined a single up the middle to score Zidek and Garlick while increasing the lead to 5-2.

The Broncos' bullpen kept the Red Storm offense from building momentum. In his first collegiate appearance, Erik Trask tossed two scoreless innings and ended up picking up the win. Zach Williams closed out the victory with two solid innings as well.
