Zwinger Repeats as CCAA Heptathlon Champion


SAN FRANCISCO – Erin Zwinger captured the conference's heptathlon title for the second-consecutive year, highlighting the Cal Poly Pomona women's track and field performances during day two Friday of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championships. The Broncos rank third with 46 points, trailing only UC San Diego (58) and Chico State (48).

Zwinger collected 4,873 points after taking first in the 800-meter race as she crossed the line in 2:25.58 in that final event of the heptathlon. She topped second-place finisher Brooke Whitburn of Chico State by 87 points. Entering the week, Zwinger ranked 12th nationally at the Division II level.

Kendahl Gaines also earned a spot on the award podium Friday, securing third place in the long jump with a distance of 18-0.5. Regina Lopez tallied a third-place finish as well, running a 36:10.32 in the 10,000-meter race. Those two performances picked up a total of 12 team points for the Broncos.

CPP earned a few more team points in the pole vault Friday as Makayla Jacoub and Frances Barnes cleared a height of 11-1. Jacoub placed sixth to collect three points while Barnes finished eighth to receive one point.

Mariah Richards-Maynard starred in the 100-meter hurdles prelim, taking first in her heat with a 14.48 time that ranks 10th all-time for CPP. Teammate Sarah Regan also qualified for Saturday's 2:20 p.m. final as she raced to a 14.87 time Friday to rank fifth overall. Regan will stay busy Saturday as she also advanced in the 400-meter hurdles, going 63.70 in the prelim to finish second.

The Broncos will also feature two runners in the 1,500-meter final on Saturday at 2 p.m. In Friday's prelims, Lizette Huerta finished sixth overall at 4:46.62 and Symone Booker took ninth at 4:49.18 with both qualifying in the process.
Isis Garland raced to a 25.45 mark in the 200-meter dash, taking fourth in the prelim to move into Saturday's final.

CPP's 4x400 relay advanced past the prelim as well, putting together a 4:00.77 time to finish sixth.
