SAN FRANCISCO - With senior
Tiffany Gray leading the way with a team-high 16 points, Cal Poly Pomona women's track and field placed second at the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championships for the program's best finish in more than a decade.
It proved to be a collective team effort and eight Broncos collected 10 or more points. The CPP throwers contributed an immense amount, including
Nina Pritchett with 14 and
Tiffany Tate with 13. Hurdles specialist
Sarah Regan also added 13 points.
While the Broncos edged out UC San Diego 142 to 138.5, Chico State captured the conference title with 213.5 points.
CPP got off to a strong start Saturday with the shot put event. Gray captured the title for the second-consecutive year, posting a 44-3.25 mark to edge the second-place finisher – Alexandra Jones of host SF State.
Pritchett notched a personal best with a distance of 43-3, placing third to earn a spot on the award stand. Tate finished fourth at 41-10.75 to contribute five more team points.
The throwers continued the success in the discus, as Broncos took the 2-3-4 spots. Pritchett placed second at 140-9, Gray took third at 128-8 and fellow fourth-year
Carissa English followed in fourth at 127-6.
The Broncos' 4x100 relay placed third with a time of 47.54, moving up to No. 5 on the program's all-time leaderboard. That relay group featured
Aariana Goshen,
Kendahl Gaines,
Isis Garland and
Araya Dixon.
Lizette Huerta also holds a No. 5 spot in the CPP record book as she raced to a time of 4:32.14 to place second among CCAA competitors. She edged out Hannah Bell of Cal State Monterey Bay in the final few strides.
Mariah Richards-Maynard also recorded a second-place finish, posting a 14.44 mark in the 100-meter hurdles to move up to No. 10 on the Broncos' all-time leaderboard. Teammate
Sarah Regan took fourth in that event, crossing the line in 14.76.
Regan shined in the 400-meter hurdles, taking second with a 62.66 mark.Â
