POMONA, Calif. - After leading Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer to a national runner-up finish in NCAA Division II, head coach
Yossi Raz has been selected as the Division of Student Affairs Star of the Year staff member.
Raz earned the Winter 2016 Star Award and then the Vice President's Cabinet selected him for the Star of the Year accolade. He led the Broncos' men's soccer program to a 17-3-3 record in 2015 as the team captured the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Tournament and West Region titles.
"Coach Raz is truly deserving of his recognition as a Division of Student Affairs Star of the Year," Director of Athletics
Brian Swanson said. "He has a developed and directed a program of distinction in the classroom, on the field and in his numerous campus and community partnerships. Coach Raz exemplifies how a model program transforms the lives of today's students who are tomorrow's leaders. We are extremely fortunate that he is on our team."
Through the past two seasons, the Broncos own an 18-0-1 record at Kellogg Field. At the conclusion of the 2015 campaign, three of the CPP student-athletes earned All-American honors:
Christian Gonzalez Diaz,
Justyn Peeples and
Alexander Turkson. Peeples went on to win the Broncos' Male Athlete of the Year honor for the entire Intercollegiate Athletics department.
This past week, eight men's soccer student-athletes earned their undergraduate degrees: Armando Ochoa, Christopher Rosales,
Elliott Bonde,
Michael Torres,
Fernando Pablo Quevedo,
Kris Korich, Peeples and Gonzalez Diaz.
Through his three seasons at CPP, Raz has guided the men's soccer program to a record of 41-11-9. In June 2014, the CPP Division of Student Affairs presented Raz with the 2013-14 Rookie of the Year award. Just a few months later in November 2014, he earned the CCAA Coach of the Year honor.
Raz and the Broncos will start their 2016 season in early September.
