SAN FRANCISCO – Fueled by three individual conference titles Saturday, the Cal Poly Pomona men's track and field team placed third at the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championships hosted at SF State.
Hector Alarcon captured the Broncos' first CCAA individual title on Saturday in the discus, the CPP 4x100 relay followed that with a first-place showing and then
Justin Ellerbee closed out the three-day meet with a top finish in the pole vault.
The leading point-getters for the Broncos through the meet proved to be
Mark Huizar, who finished first in the 10,000-meter race on Friday before placing fourth in the 5,000-meter run to total 15 points.
James Weiner also added 14 points of his own, taking second in the 100, third in the 200 and also contributing to the 4x100 win.
Alarcon provided CPP with an impressive start to Saturday's action. He captured first place in the discus event, launching a clutch final throw of 160-9 for a comeback win. Teammate Julian Ambrosine also provided team points in that event, taking sixth at 139-11.
The Broncos' 4x100 relay continued the team's momentum as that group of
Gabriel Wirtz,
Robertino Salgado,
Louis Martin III and
James Weiner took first with a time of 41.20. CPP held fourth place heading into the final 100 meters but Weiner delivered a clutch performance to help the Broncos earn the victory.
Weiner stayed busy Saturday as he also placed second in the 100-meter dash, racing to a 10.58 mark. Martin also competed in that final, taking fifth at 10.71. Later in the day, Weiner returned to the awards stand for the third time with a 21.81 time in the 200 that put him in third place.
Freshman
Brennon Koryta took second in the 1,500-meter race, crossing the line in 3:53.04. Teammate
Ruben Dominguez finished just a few seconds behind, earning fifth place at 3:56.81.
William Ebiner starred in the 3,000-meter steeplechase as he placed fourth with a time of 9:09.33. That time – the fastest for CPP since 2007 - represents a "B" provisional mark and puts him at No. 10 on the program leaderboard.
In the 110-meter hurdles,
Marcus Romo took third with a time of 15.01. That performance pulled in six team points for the Broncos. Senior
Allen Black put together a tremendous showing in the pole vault at the end of the meet. He posted a 15-11.25 mark to finish second behind Ellerbee.
