Considered to be the pioneer for Cal Poly Pomona athletics, Stull served as the university's first athletic director and was instrumental in developing the athletic and intramural programs for the university.

He took over the head men's basketball coaching position in 1947 and served for 24 years. He led the 1953-54 Broncos to a 26-12 record -- a 56-year record for most wins until the 2010 NCAA champions went 28-6. In 1963, the Broncos earned their first Elite Eight berth when they reached the NCAA quarterfinals against powerhouse University of Evansville.

He also served as the head football coach in 1956 and led the Broncos to a 7-2 record with four shutouts.

After his retirement from CPP in 1971, he chaired the Academic Policies committee that created the constitution and bylaws for the university. He also served as the state senator representing Cal Poly Pomona from 1973-76.
