Chi Cheng
Considered one of the greatest female Asian athletes of the 20th century, Chi Cheng (1971), broke track and field world records and received numerous awards, including a bronze medal in the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City in the 80m hurdles.

Cheng transferred to Cal Poly Pomona from the University of Hawai’i, and received most of her athletic training at CPP. While a student, she won four U.S. national championships and was the winner in 153 of the 154 events she entered, all unaffiliated with the university. Representing China, she ran in the 1960, 1964, and 1968 Olympic games, winning a bronze medal in the last.

The CPP women’s track & field program was later established ahead of the 1980 season. Cheng was named an honorary inductee into the Cal Poly Pomona Athletics Hall of Fame on May 21, 1994.
